ABSTRACT Objective: To report on a case of malignant hyperthermia in a child after a magnetic resonance imaging of the skull was performed using sevoflurane anesthesia. Case description: A 3-year-old boy admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit after presenting clinical and laboratory findings consistent with unspecified viral meningoencephalitis. While the patient was sedated, a magnetic resonance imaging of the skul was performed using propofol followed by the administration of sevoflurane through a laryngeal mask in order to continue anesthesia. Approximately three hours after the start of the procedure, the patient presented persistent tachycardia, tachypnea, generalized muscular stiffness and hyperthermia. With a diagnostic hypothesis of malignant hyperthermia, dantrolene was then administered, which immediately induced muscle stiffness, tachycardia, tachypnea and reduced body temperature. Comments: Malignant hyperthermia is a rare pharmacogenetic syndrome characterized by a severe hypermetabolic reaction after the administration of halogenated inhalational anesthetics or depolarizing muscle relaxants such as succinylcholine, or both. Although it is a potentially fatal disease, the rapid administration of continued doses dantrolene has drastically reduced the morbidity and mortality of the disease.


RESUMO Objetivo: Relatar um caso de hipertermia maligna em criança após exame de ressonância magnética de crânio realizada sob efeito anestésico de sevoflurano. Descrição do caso: Menino de três anos de idade, admitido na Unidade de Terapia Intensiva Pediátrica (UTIP) após apresentar quadros clínico e laboratorial compatíveis com meningoencefalite viral não especificada. Foi realizado um exame de ressonância magnética de crânio com sedação utilizando, na indução anestésica, o propofol seguido pela administração de sevoflurano por meio de máscara laríngea para manutenção anestésica. Aproximadamente três horas após o início do procedimento, o paciente apresentou taquicardia, taquipneia, rigidez muscular generalizada e hipertermia persistentes. Com hipótese diagnóstica de hipertermia maligna, foi então administrado dantrolene, que fez ceder de forma imediata a rigidez muscular, a taquicardia, a taquipneia e reduziu a temperatura corporal. Comentários: A hipertermia maligna é uma síndrome farmacogenética rara, que se caracteriza por reação hipermetabólica grave após administração de anestésicos inalatórios halogenados e/ou relaxantes musculares despolarizantes, como a succinilcolina. Apesar de ser uma doença potencialmente fatal, a rápida administração de dantrolene, junto às doses de manutenção, tem reduzido drasticamente a morbimortalidade da doença.

Abstract INTRODUCTION: The incidence of dengue has increased throughout the 2000s with a consequent global increase in atypical clinical forms. METHODS: This study reports a series of cases of neurological dengue out of 498 confirmed cases of laboratory dengue in Goiânia, Brazil. Cases were confirmed based on viral RNA detection via polymerase chain reaction or IgM antibody capture. RESULTS: Neurological symptoms occurred in 5.6% of cases, including paresthesia (3.8%), encephalitis (2%), encephalopathy (1%), seizure (0.8%), meningoencephalitis (0.4%), and paresis (0.4%). DENV-3 was the predominant circulating serotype (93%). CONCLUSIONS: We reported dengue cases with neurological manifestations in endemic area.

ABSTRACT

El síndrome DRESS (drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms) constituye una reacción adversa a fármacos, potencialmente mortal, caracterizada por una erupción cutánea polimorfa asociada a fiebre, linfadeno-patías y compromiso multiorgánico con eosinofilia. Presentamos el caso clínico de un hombre inmunocompetente con un síndrome DRESS secundario a carbamazepina que cursó concomitantemente con una meningoencefalitis por virus herpes humano 6 (VHH-6). El rol patogénico del VHH-6 en el síndrome DRESS sigue siendo controversial; sin embargo, dada la importancia diagnóstica y eventualmente pronóstica de la infección por VHH-6, su tamizaje sería recomendable dentro del estudio de estos pacientes.


DRESS syndrome (drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms) is an adverse life-threatening drug reaction characterized by a polymorphous rash associated with fever, lymphadenopathy and multiorgan involvement with eosinophilia. We present the case of an immunocompetent man with DRESS syndrome secondary to carbamazepine, that developed concomitantly meningoencephalitis caused by human herpes virus 6 (HHV-6), and a review of literature. The pathogenic role of HHV-6 in DRESS syndrome remains controversial. Given the diagnostic and possibly prognostic significance of HHV-6, the screening seems to be a good measure to use in the clinical management of these patients.

ABSTRACT

The reactivation of Chagas disease in HIV infected patients presents high mortality and morbidity. We present the case of a female patient with confirmed Chagasic meningoencephalitis as AIDS-defining illness. Interestingly, her TCD4+ lymphocyte cell count was 318 cells/mm3. After two months of induction therapy, one year of maintenance with benznidazol, and early introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), the patient had good clinical, parasitological and radiological evolution. We used a qualitative polymerase chain reaction for the monitoring of T. cruzi parasitemia during and after the treatment. We emphasize the potential value of molecular techniques along with clinical and radiological parameters in the follow-up of patients with Chagas disease and HIV infection. Early introduction of HAART, prolonged induction and maintenance of antiparasitic therapy, and its discontinuation are feasible, in the current management of reactivation of Chagas disease.


A reativação da doença de Chagas em pacientes com a infecção pelo HIV apresenta uma alta morbidade e mortalidade. Neste relato, apresentamos caso confirmado de meningoencefalite chagásica, como doença definidora de aids, em paciente com 318 linfócitos T-CD4+/mm3. Após 2 meses de tratamento seguido de um ano de profilaxia secundária com benzonidazol e início precoce de terapia antirretroviral (HAART), a paciente apresentou boa evolução clínica, parasitológica e radiológica. Utilizamos a reação em cadeia da polimerase qualitativa do T. cruzi, para monitorização da parasitemia por T. cruzi durante e após o tratamento. Ressaltamos o valor potencial das técnicas moleculares associadas aos parâmetros clínicos e radiológicos nos pacientes com doença de Chagas e infecção pelo HIV. A introdução precoce da terapia antirretroviral, a terapia antiparasitária prolongada, manutenção e descontinuação da mesma, são desafios atuais, embora possíveis, no manejo da reativação da doença de Chagas na era das terapias antirretrovirais de alta eficácia.

ABSTRACT

El virus influenza produce epidemias y pandemias con alta morbilidad-mortalidad. Según datos de la Organización Mundial de la Salud, causa 3-5 millones de casos de enfermedad grave y 250 000 a 500 000 muertes cada año. La enfermedad es fundamentalmente respiratoria y las complicaciones más frecuentes son: neumonía, descompensación de enfermedades subyacentes y, menos frecuentemente, complicaciones no respiratorias. Se presenta un paciente de 6 años con meningoencefalitis por la nueva cepa influenza A (IA) pH1N1, con documentación viral en líquido cefalorraquídeo (LCR). Se detallan hallazgos clínicos, de laboratorio e imágenes del caso, el cual evolucionó favorablemente con secuelas. Resulta de gran importancia clínica y epidemiológica el conocimiento de esta forma de presentación, debido a la escasa evidencia científica publicada internacionalmente.


The influenza virus causes epidemics and pandemics with high morbidity and mortality. According to the World Health Organization, this virus causes 3-5 million cases of severe illness and 250,000 to 500,000 deaths each year. The disease is mainly respiratory and the most common complications are pneumonia, exacerbation of underlying diseases and less frequently respiratory complications. We report a 6-year-old patient with meningoencephalitis due to a new influenza A (IA), strain pH1N1, with viral documentation in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). We provide detailed clinical, laboratory and imaging of the case, which responded favorably to sequels. Knowledge of this form of presentation is of great clinical and epidemiological significance due to the limited scientific evidence published internationally.

El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar la prevalencia de citomegalovirus en pacientes pediátricos con afecciones neurológicas, provenientes del Estado Zulia, Venezuela durante el período 2007-2008. Se recolectaron 186 muestras pareadas de líquido cefalorraquídeo (LCR) y suero, de pacientes entre 1 mes y 14 años de edad, que presentaron sintomatología clínica sugestiva de afectación del SNC y cuyo estudio bacteriológico convencional de LCR resultó negativo. Se determinó la relación albúmina LCR/suero a fin de descartar contaminación y a los pares óptimos se les determinó por la técnica de ELISA anticuerpos IgM e IgG en suero e IgG en LCR anti-CMV. Del total de muestras recolectadas 40,86% (76/186) resultaron óptimas para el análisis. De los 76 casos analizados, el 2,6% (2/76) de las muestras de suero resultaron positivas para IgM; 93,4% (71/76) fueron seropositivas a IgG mientras que el 31,6% (24/76) de las muestras de LCR presentaron anticuerpos IgG. En cuanto a los parámetros citoquímicos del LCR, se observaron valores de glucosa aumentados en el 58,3% (p<0,05) de los pacientes con CMV que presentaron meningoencefalitis. En los pacientes con meningitis que presentaron positividad de anticuerpos IgG anti-CMV en el LCR se observó un aumento significativo (p<0,01) en las proteínas del LCR. Se evidencia que una proporción de los pacientes pediátricos con afecciones neurológicas presentaron infección aguda por CMV, lo que demuestra una participación importante de este agente en pacientes del estado Zulia, Venezuela para el período en estudio.


The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of cytomegalovirus (CMV) in pediatric patients with neurological disorders from Zulia State, Venezuela, during the period 2007-2008. Samples of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum were obtained from 186 patients with neurological symptoms and bacteriological negative CSF. The albumin CSF/serum content was determined to rule out contamination of CSF and optimal pairs were determined by ELISA of IgM and IgG anti-CMV antibodies in serum and IgG in CSF. Only 40.86% (76/186) of patients were optimal for this study. Serum samples positive for IgM antibodies (2/76; 2.6%) and IgG antibodies (71/76; 93.4%) were obtained. CSF IgG antibodies were observed in 24/76 patients (31.6%). Increased values of glucose in CSF (p<0.05) were observed in 58.3% of CMV patients with meningoencephalitis. In addition, increased CSF protein concentration (p<0.01) was observed in CSF anti-CMV antibodies positive patients with meningitis. This study shows high prevalence of acute CMV infection in pediatric patients with neurological affections suggesting an important role of this virus in this pathology during the studied period.

ABSTRACT

The reactivation of human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) in patients with AIDS can result in an acute and severe diffuse meningoencephalitis. We describe the epidemiological, clinical and outcome findings of five patients with diagnosis of HIV/AIDS and central nervous system involvement (CNS) due to HHV-6. Fever was present in all the patients. Meningeal compromise, seizures and encephalitis were present in some of the patients. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens was positive for HHV-6 in all the patients. HHV-6 should be included among opportunistic and emerging pathogens that involve the CNS in patients with AIDS.


A reativação do herpesvírus humano 6 (HHV-6), em um hospedeiro com AIDS, pode resultar em meningoencefalite aguda difusa. Nós descrevemos a epidemiologia, a clínica e resultados encontrados em cinco pacientes com diagnóstico de HIV/AIDS e comprometimento do sistema nervoso central (SNC) devido ao HHV-6. Todos os pacientes apresentaram febre. Sinais e sintomas de comprometimento meníngeo, convulsões e encefalite podem ser encontrados. A reação em cadeia da polimerase (PCR) de amostras do líquor foi positiva para HHV-6 em todos os pacientes. O HHV-6 deve ser incluído entre os patógenos emergentes oportunistas que comprometem o SNC de pacientes com AIDS.

OBJETIVO: Relatar um caso de meningoencefalite, provavelmente causada pelo vírus vacinal da febre amarela transmitido pelo leite materno. DESCRIÇÃO: Paciente de 38 dias de idade, internado em 23/05/09 para investigação de febre. No dia 25/05/09 iniciaram-se as crises convulsivas. O exame do líquido cefalorraquidiano (LCR) foi sugestivo de meningoencefalite. A mãe havia recebido dose da vacina contra febre amarela e o bebê estava em aleitamento materno exclusivo. Recebeu alta com controle das crises convulsivas. Foi detectado anticorpo IgM específico para febre amarela no soro e no LCR. COMENTÁRIOS: Em 2009, ocorreu o primeiro caso confirmado de meningoencefalite pelo vírus vacinal da febre amarela transmitido pelo leite materno. Descrevemos o segundo caso, em que, possivelmente, o vírus vacinal tenha sido o agente etiológico da meningoencefalite. O Ministério da Saúde do Brasil recomenda adiar a vacinação de nutrizes até a criança completar 6 meses ou orientar alternativas para evitar o risco de transmissão do vírus vacinal pelo leite materno.


OBJECTIVES: To describe a case of infant meningoencephalitis that was probably caused by yellow fever vaccine virus transmitted via breastmilk. DESCRIPTIONS: A 38-day old patient was admitted to hospital on May 23, 2009, with fever. On May 25, 2009, convulsive crises began. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) test results were suggestive of meningoencephalitis. The mother had been given a dose of yellow fever vaccine and the baby was on exclusive breastfeeding. The baby was discharged after the convulsive crises were controlled. Tests identified IgM antibodies specific for yellow fever in both serum and CSF. COMMENTS: In 2009, the first case was confirmed of meningoencephalitis caused by the yellow fever vaccine virus transmitted via breastmilk. We describe a second case in which the vaccine virus was possibly the etiologic agent of meningoencephalitis. The Brazilian Ministry of Health now recommends delaying vaccination of nursing mothers until their children reach 6 months or providing them with guidance on alternative options to avoid the risk of transmission of the vaccine virus via breastmilk.

A infecção por herpesvírus bovino (BoHV) é uma das principais causas de doença neurológica em bovinos na região Centro-Oeste do Brasil. O uso de técnicas moleculares de diagnóstico representa uma contribuição importante para o estudo dessa doença. Este trabalho descreve o uso de uma técnica específica de PCR multiplex para identificar BoHV-5 e BoHV-1 em 76 amostras de encéfalo de bovinos fixadas em formol e incluídas em parafina. Com base nas alterações histológicas, as amostras foram separadas em 2 grupos: o Grupo 1 era composto de 40 amostras de bovinos com meningoencefalite necrosante característica da infecção por BoHV; no Grupo 2 estavam 36 amostras de casos com encefalite não-supurativa inespecífica. Identificação de BoHV-5 foi constatada em 40 por cento das amostras do grupo 1 e em 33 por cento das amostras do grupo 2. Não houve amplificação de DNA de BoHV-1 em nenhuma amostra.


Bovine herpesvirus (BoHV) is an important cause of neurological disease in cattle in the Midwest Brazil. The application of molecular diagnostic techniques represents an important contribution for the study of BoHV. This paper describes the detection of BoHV-5 and BoHV-1 by a specific multiplex PCR assay in 76 paraffin-embedded samples from central nervous system (CNS) of cattle with neurological disorders. The samples were divided into 2 groups according to the histological features: Group 1 was composed of 40 cases of necrotizing meningoencephalitis (characteristic of BoHV infection), and Group 2 was composed of 36 cases of nonspecific nonsuppurative meningoencephalitis. Positive results for BoHV-5 accounted for 40 percent of the samples in the group 1 and 33 percent in the group 2. No detection of BoHV-1 was recorded.

ABSTRACT

La criptococosis es una enfermedad oportunista de distribución mundial. Frecuentemente es una infección definitoria de SIDA. El tratamiento antirretroviral ha disminuido su frecuencia. El impacto de esta entidad en Venezuela es desconocido. El objetivo de este trabajo es describir las características más relevantes de la criptococosis en nuestro país. Se revisaron 110 historias clínicas de pacientes hospitalizados con el diagnostico de criptococosis, entre 1994 y 2003, en 6 hospitales. Los datos recolectados incluyeron: características demográficas, clínicas, diagnósticas, terapéuticas y la evolución de los pacientes. Para el análisis se utilizaron los programas SPSS 10.0 y EpiInfo 6.04 (2001). Dentro de los 110 pacientes evaluados se incluyeron 17 protocolos de autopsia. Uno solo de los pacientes tenia 8 años de edad, el resto era mayor de 15 años. 91 eran del sexo masculino y 19 femenino. 91 (82,73 por ciento) tenían SIDA y 19 (17,27 por ciento) eran VIH negativo. En los pacientes con SIDA el valor promedio de CD4+ fue < 200 cel/mm³ y la carga viral era > 30000 copias/mL; 52 (57,14 por ciento) de los casos no tenían otra infección oportunista y 39 (42,86 por ciento) tenían otras condiciones asociadas, tales como tuberculosis (30,97 por ciento), neumocistosis (28,21 por ciento), y toxoplasmosis (20,51 por ciento). En los pacientes VIH negativo, el uso de esteroides (25 por ciento) fue el factor de riesgo predominante. Dos pacientes eran embarazadas. En 107 (57,27 por ciento) se encontró infección del SNC. 12 (13,19 por ciento) de los pacientes con SIDA tenían alteración de pares craneales. Se encontró afectación pulmonar en 4 (3,77 por ciento) pacientes, 1 de ellos con SIDA. La criptococosis fue la enfermedad definitoria de SIDA en el 61,54 por ciento de los casos. 33 (30 por ciento) de los pacientes fallecieron. Cryptococcosis is an opportunistic disease of worldwide distribution. It is frequently an AIDS-defining infection. Antiretroviral treatment has reduced its occurrence. In Venezuela, the impact of this disease is unknown. The aim of this study is to describe the most relevant features of cryptococcosis in our country. 110 clinical records with a diagnosis of cryptococcosis hospitalized between 1994 and 2003 in 6 Venezuelan hospitals were analyzed. Data collected included demographic, clinical, diagnostic, therapeutic and outcome information. SPSS 10.0 software and EpiInfo 6, version 6.04 (2001) were used. 110 patients with cryptococcosis were enrolled, including 17 autopsy protocols. One was 8 years old, the rest were over 15. Nineteen were female and 91 male; 91 (82.73 percent) had AIDS, 19 (17.27 percent) were HIV negative. Among the AIDS patients, average CD4+ count was < 200 cel/mm3 and viral load was > 30000 copies/ml; 52 (57.14 percent) did not have other opportunistic infections or AIDS-related disease, and 39 (42.86 percent) had other associated conditions, such as tuberculosis (30.97 percent), PCP (28.21 percent) and toxoplasmosis (20.51 percent). In HIV negative patients, use of steroids (25 percent) was the predominant risk factor. Two patients were pregnant. 107 (57.27 percent) presented CNS infection; 12 (13.19 percent) with AIDS had cranial nerve alterations. Pulmonary disease was found in 4 (3.77 percent), of which one had AIDS. Cryptococcosis was an AIDS-defining infection in 61.54 percent of cases; 33 (30 percent) of the patients died. In most of the patients, cryptococcosis was associated with AIDS. In spite of the efficacy of antiretroviral treatment, this mycosis is still significant in Venezuela, perhaps due to late HIV infection diagnosis

ABSTRACT

Bovine herpesvirus type 5 (BHV-5) is a major agent of meningoencephalitis in cattle and establishes latent infections mainly in sensory nerve ganglia. The distribution of latent BHV-5 DNA in the brain of rabbits prior to and after virus reactivation was studied using a nested PCR. Fifteen rabbits inoculated intranasally with BHV-5 were euthanized 60 days post-inoculation (group A, N = 8) or submitted to dexamethasone treatment (2.6 mg kg-1 day-1, im, for 5 days) and euthanized 60 days later (group B, N = 7) for tissue examination. Two groups of BHV-1-infected rabbits (C, N = 3 and D, N = 3) submitted to each treatment were used as controls. Viral DNA of group A rabbits was consistently detected in trigeminal ganglia (8/8), frequently in cerebellum (5/8), anterior cerebral cortex and pons-medulla (3/8) and occasionally in dorsolateral (2/8), ventrolateral and posterior cerebral cortices, midbrain and thalamus (1/8). Viral DNA of group B rabbits showed a broader distribution, being detected at higher frequency in ventrolateral (6/7) and posterior cerebral cortices (5/7), pons-medulla (6/7), thalamus (4/7), and midbrain (3/7). In contrast, rabbits inoculated with BHV-1 harbored viral DNA almost completely restricted to trigeminal ganglia and the distribution did not change post-reactivation. These results demonstrate that latency by BHV-5 is established in several areas of the rabbit's brain and that virus reactivation leads to a broader distribution of latent viral DNA. Spread of virus from trigeminal ganglia and other areas of the brain likely contributes to this dissemination and may contribute to the recrudescence of neurological disease frequently observed upon BHV-5 reactivation.

ABSTRACT

Se realiza análisis prospectivo aleatorio a 198 pacientes con meningoencefalitis aséptica (MEA) ingresados en el servicio de medicina del hospital provincial ®Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola¼ de Ciego de Avila, Cuba. Se les efectuó estudios con sueros pareados para determinar anticuerpos neutralizantes a enterovirus, pruebas de hemoglutinación, neutralización viral para arbovirus, hemolítica para leptospira y estudio virológico de heces fecales buscando enterovirus. En 36.8 por ciento de los pacientes se encontró como agente etiológico un enterovirus. El segundo agente en frecuencia fue la leptospira en 14.6 por ciento. Se determinó el agente etiológico en 51.4 por ciento de los pacientes estudiados

ABSTRACT

Infecção experimental de ovinos com o herpesvírus bovino tipo 5 (BHV-5) reproduziu vários aspectos da infecção pelo BHV-5 em bovinos. Inoculação intranasal foi seguida de extensiva replicação viral na cavidade nasal, excreção e transmissão do vírus a outros animais, estabelecimento e reativação de latência, e o desenvolvimento de meningoencefalite clínica em um animal. Ovinos inoculados com a amostra brasileira EVI-88 apresentaram hipertermia transitória, hiperemia da mucosa nasal e corrimento nasal de seroso a muco-purulento. Os animais eliminaram vírus em secreções nasais em títulos de até 107,11DICC50/ml por até 16 dias. Um cordeiro apresentou sinais clínicos de encefalite no dia 10 pós-inoculação, sendo sacrificado in extremis no início do dia 13. Infectividade foi detectada em várias regiões do encéfalo desse animal, incluindo os hemisférios anterior e posterior, córtex dorso- e ventro-lateral, ponte, pedúnculo cerebral, cerebelo e bulbo olfatório. Alterações histológicas foram observadas em várias regiões do encéfalo, principalmente no hemisfério anterior, córtex ventro-lateral e pedúnculos cerebrais, e consistiram de meningite mononuclear, manguitos perivasculares, gliose focal, necrose e inclusões intranucleares em neurônios . Quatro ovinos mantidos como sentinelas adquiriram a infecção e eliminaram vírus a partir do final do segundo dia, até 7 dias. Ovinos inoculados com a amostra argentina A663 apresentaram apenas hiperemia e umidecimento da mucosa nasal, embora eliminassem vírus nas secreções nasais por até 15 dias. Tratamento dos animais com dexametasona a partir do dia 50 pós-inoculação provocou reativação da infecção latente e eliminação viral durante até 11 dias por 76,9% (10/13) dos animais inoculados e por 100% (3/3) dos animais sentinela. Esses resultados demonstram que ovinos são susceptíveis à infecção aguda e latente pelo BHV-5 e sugerem que infecções naturais de ovinos por este vírus podem potencialmente ocorrer. Ness sentido, uma possível participação da espécie ovina como reservatório natural desse vírus deve ser melhor investigada

ABSTRACT

Entre los meses de octubre y diciembre de 1995 se reportó un incremento en los casos de meningoencefalitis viral en nuestro país. Se recibieron 23 muestras de heces fecales, que procedían de 2 provincias, con la finalildad de obtener el aislamiento viral mediante la inoculación de éstas en cultivo de células y ratones recién nacidos simultáneamente, para comparar la sensibilidad de ambos sistemas en el aislamiento. Se obtuvo un mayor número de aislamientos en cultivo de células que en ratones, el cultivo de células de riñón de mono verde africano adulto normal (Vero) resultó el más sensible. Se lograron 18 aislamientos, que fueron identificados como Coxsackievirus B5. Se realizó un estudio anatomo-patológico en ratones inoculados y se observaron lesiones compatibles con la infección enteroviral

ABSTRACT

Se detectó un incremento en los casos reportados de meningoencefalitis viral (MEV) en los meses de octubre y noviembre de 1995 con respecto a igual período de 1994. Se recibieron en el Laboratorio de Enterovirus del Instituto de Medicina Tropical "Pedro Kouri" 43 muestras de heces fecales procedentes de niños con este diagnóstico, y se obtuvieron 23 aislamientos (53,4 por ciento) identificados como Coxsackievirus B5. Además, en 43 sueros pareados investigados por la prueba de neutralización frente a varios Enterovirus, se obtuvieron 21 positivos (48,8 por ciento) al agente aislado. Esto nos permitió afirmar, apoyados en el cuadro clínico y en la epidemiología, que estábamos en presencia de un brote de MEV producido por coxsackievirus B5

ABSTRACT

As meningoencefalites por vírus determinam um padrao de hipercelularidade liquórica tipo linfomonocitário e seus agentes etiológicos sao pouco conhecidos no Brasil. Aspectos da patogenia das viroses que acometem o sistema nervoso central sao analisados desde o momento da infecçao. Os mecanismos de defesa antiviral do hospedeiro, a chegada dos vírus ao sistema nervoso central, suas distintas formas de invasao do tecido nervoso, bem como o acometimento deste tecido e a imunidade a nível local, sao abordados neste trabalho de revisao.
